Wolfsburg, 09 July 2026

IG Metall on Thursday used car cavalcades, rallies and a nationwide action day to protest the cost-cutting and restructuring plans of the major German car groups Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, while the VW supervisory board met in Wolfsburg to discuss a new business model.

At the center of the day of protest was the Volkswagen Group's supervisory board meeting, which according to reports began at 2:30 p.m. in Wolfsburg. In front of the executive high-rise where the meeting was held, a rally was planned, according to sources close to IG Metall. The group's works council and the union had simultaneously called for information and protest events at all VW Group sites in Germany. "These are information or protest events, not warning strikes," IG Metall made explicitly clear.
