Car with eight teenagers crashes into construction truck near Nidda – Two dead and six seriously injured

A large contingent of emergency services, firefighters, and police was dispatched for the rescue and recovery operations. Several rescue helicopters were deployed to fly the injured to surrounding hospitals. The country road around the crash site was fully closed for the duration of the operations.

The emergency pastoral care for first responders was activated and, together with chaplains from the district, took care of the victims' relatives as well as the deployed helpers. Specially trained teams provide support to both the families of the affected teenagers and the rescuers, some of whom have to process distressing impressions.

Emergency pastoral care supports families and responders

The Wetteraukreis and the town of Nidda announced further information for Thursday. Schools and youth facilities in the region were informed about the incidents so that affected pupils can receive psychological support. A central contact point for parents was also set up.

Police are asking witnesses who observed the accident or who can provide information about the driving behavior of those involved to contact the responsible precinct. Information is specifically requested regarding the exact time of the impact and the speed of the car. Dashcam footage from vehicles that were traveling on the route at the time in question could also be important for the investigation.

Investigations ongoing «at full speed»

Spokespersons of the responsible police directorate, including Kevin Schubach and Frank Weber, announced that the investigations to clarify the cause of the accident would be pushed forward «mit Hochdruck». This includes the evaluation of the vehicle, securing evidence at the crash site, as well as interviews with witnesses and survivors. Only after the completion of this work will the authority go public with confirmed information.

In parallel to the cause of the accident, investigators are also looking into how eight teenagers aged 14 and 15 could have been traveling together in a passenger car. Both youth protection law and road traffic regulations play a role here. The authorities announced that possible violations of the Youth Protection Act and the Road Traffic Act would be examined separately.

Questions about occupants and responsibility

The incident has triggered a wave of dismay in the Wetterau region. Mayors and church representatives called for the families of the victims to be given space and for speculation to be avoided. Other municipalities also offered their help in caring for the injured and their relatives.

The emergency pastoral care for first responders pointed out that the emotional consequences of such an accident often only become visible days or weeks later. They therefore offered telephone counseling for relatives, eyewitnesses, and helpers. School psychologists are available as the first point of contact at the secondary schools in the Wetteraukreis.
