A 2026 Cash Study published on Tuesday by Global Payments, Erste Bank, and Sparkasse shows that digital card payments continue to grow in Austria, but cash still dominates in everyday life.
The study was conducted by the market research institute INTEGRAL and evaluated by SENSOR Market Research. It appears as a joint publication by Global Payments, Erste Bank, and Sparkasse and examines the payment behavior of Austrians in 2026. The focus is on both cash payments and cashless alternatives such as debit and credit cards.
Key findings concern the share of cash in daily transactions as well as the growing prevalence of contactless card payments. According to the study, cash remains the most frequently used payment method, while digital payments are steadily increasing, particularly in brick-and-mortar retail. The average cash reserves held by private households also play a role in the evaluation.
