Around every second consumer in Austria now uses self-checkout registers or scan-&-go systems in retail, according to a survey published on Thursday by Reppublika Research on behalf of the Handelsverband.

The survey, in which around 1,000 people were questioned, shows broad acceptance of the new register systems. Self-checkout registers, at which customers scan products themselves and pay cashlessly, are part of everyday life in many branches, according to the findings. Hybrid models, in which the traditional checkout area is supplemented by self-service, are also widespread in hardware stores and supermarkets.

With the so-called scan-&-go process, digitalization goes a step further. As the Handelsverband explains, customers scan the products during shopping using their own smartphone and pay directly in an app. The payment process thus takes place without the detour through a stationary checkout terminal.
