Casper Stornes wins Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt as Norway takes top two spots

A heat-shortened race day

The 3.8-kilometer swim was held over its full, unchanged length in the 29-degree waters of the Langener Waldsee and was contested without wetsuits. The course featured a brief land exit in the middle of the swim before athletes returned to the water. A roughly 20-man group exited together, with Jamie Riddle and Vincent Luis prominent at the front of the pack. Jonas Hoffmann, racing out of Butzbach in Hesse, exited the water with more than four minutes' deficit to the lead group, while at one point in the swim Jonas Hoffmann was in a small second group about 20 seconds behind a 21-man lead group, with another group further back including Leon Chevalier.

Out of the water, the field tackled a bike course that had been reduced from its usual 180 kilometers to 125 kilometers. The change removed the northern Wetteraukreis loop, with the course now turning back toward Frankfurt at Nidderau and omitting the section over Altenstadt and Florstadt-Stammheim. At the 13.5-kilometer mark of the bike, Nathan Guerbeur led a larger group, with Gustav Iden, Riddle, Stratmann, Brock Hoel, Luis and Ditlev all within one minute of the front. By the 46-kilometer point the lead group had shrunk to five riders — Guerbeur, Iden, Stornes, Riddle and Antonio Benito — with Ditlev seventh and 44 seconds off the pace.

A leading group takes shape on the bike

Race leader Nathan Guerbeur had a scare along the Main riverbank in Frankfurt when a passerby on a bicycle crossed the bike course very close in front of him; Guerbeur swerved briefly and continued racing without losing contact with the leaders. At the bike halfway point, around 79.5 kilometers, Guerbeur led with a time of 2:34:17, ahead of Iden by 24 seconds, Riddle by 29 seconds, Nick Emde by 49 seconds and Kacper Stepniak by 55 seconds. Vincent Luis trailed the leader by roughly 50 seconds at that point, while Finn Große-Freese had an 8:20 deficit. Jonas Hoffmann, Marc Eggeling and Julian Becker were 11:40 behind the leader, and Paul Schuster sat about 23rd, more than four minutes off the lead.

Finn Große-Freese had a difficult ride, first encountering an oncoming car on the bike course and reacting calmly, then hitting a pothole that cost him his nutrition. By an intermediate update he had a five-minute deficit to Guerbeur. At the bike midpoint, Zepuntke, Stratmann, Emde and Hirsch formed the first chase group. After Guerbeur was caught, eight riders made up the new lead group: Guerbeur, Iden, Riddle, Stornes, Antonio Benito, Hoel, Hirsch and Stratmann, with Ditlev one minute behind.

Incidents and chasers on the shortened course

From T2 the athletes set out on a half marathon of 21.1 kilometers, half the distance of the usual Ironman marathon, with the finish line back at the Römerberg in central Frankfurt. Heat protection measures along the adjusted course included additional cooling stations, more water and electrolytes at aid stations, shadier course sections and enhanced medical support.

Norway dominates, Stratmann secures Hawaii slot

Stornes, identified by the race preview as one of the three main favorites alongside Iden and Ditlev, delivered on his billing to take the European Championship title in 4:50:23. Iden crossed in 4:52:54 to complete a Norwegian one-two, and Antonio Benito of Spain finished third in 4:54:47. Jan Stratmann was the best-placed German athlete in 10th place with a time of 4:57:35, securing his place on the start list for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii through one of the six qualifying slots awarded in Frankfurt. No German athlete reached the podium.

With Stornes and Iden finishing first and second, Norway took the top two steps and confirmed its strength in long-distance triathlon on the eve of the Hawaii World Championship in October. Stratmann's qualifying run gave the home crowd a positive German result to celebrate despite the absence of a German podium finisher.
