Albert Stegemann, deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has suggested reducing the annual gross income limit above which children are required to help finance their parents’ long-term care.
In an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung published on Friday, Stegemann said he sees an opportunity to lower the earnings threshold that triggers the obligation. “Ich sehe die Möglichkeit, die Einkommensgrenze, bei der man zu den elterlichen Pflegekosten herangezogen wird, herunterzusetzen,” he told the newspaper.
Currently, adult children with an annual gross income exceeding 100,000 euros must contribute to the cost of a parent’s nursing home placement. The threshold was introduced in 2020 and Stegemann now describes it as “mehr oder weniger willkürlich” — more or less arbitrary.
