The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the social welfare association VdK have pushed back against a proposal by CDU deputy parliamentary group leader Albert Stegemann to make people use their own homes and assets before the community pays for long-term care.

Stegemann had called for more personal responsibility and greater personal contributions from care patients, including using their own assets and homes. "Wer Vermögen besitzt, muss zunächst eigenes Vermögen einsetzen, auch das Eigenheim, bevor die Gemeinschaft zahlt," he said.

The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from the SPD and VdK. "Schon heute können sich viele Menschen Pflege nicht mehr leisten. Pflege macht heute schon arm," VdK president Verena Bentele told the Funke media group. She described demands for ever more private provision as "immer absurder und tatsächlich zynischer."
