IGGÖ Sets Conditions for Politicians

In the same declaration, the Islamic religious communities committed themselves "clearly" to the joint fight against extremism and radicalization. They pointed to their nationwide structure: "Our religious communities, with over 300 mosques across Austria, work together with state authorities and have for years made an active contribution to prevention, imam training, and social cohesion." The IGGÖ used the statement simultaneously to position itself as a partner to state institutions.

The political pressure on Bauer grew rapidly. Criticism was voiced from the ranks of the ÖVP, to which the minister belongs, as well as from religious communities and civil society organizations. What drew particular criticism were the blanket tone and the lack of differentiation between the IGGÖ as an umbrella organization and extremist tendencies, against which the faith community itself takes action.

In an APA interview, Bauer distanced herself from the sharpest passages of her previous evening's appearance and made clear that she did not advocate a ban of the Islamic Faith Community. She emphasized that blanket statements did not do justice to the complexity of the debate and signaled her willingness to engage in dialogue with religious representatives.

In Viennese government circles, it was said on Saturday that the clarification had been coordinated with the Chancellor's Office. Observers assessed the episode as a typical pattern of a political escalation chain: media-effective appearance, public outrage, swift correction. The fact that the IGGÖ disseminated its reply in the form of a press release and through interview partners underscored the desire for a factual, fact-based debate instead of further symbolic politics.

Reactions and Open Questions

It remained unclear what concrete consequences the episode would have for future cooperation between the Chancellor's Office and the IGGÖ. The faith community had recently emphasized on several occasions that it wished to continue existing cooperation in the areas of prevention and imam training. Bauer announced that she intended to hold talks with religious representatives in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the reaction on social media was divided: while parts of the Islamic community welcomed the clarification as long overdue, critics of the minister accused her of having catered to populist resentments with her original statement. A parliamentary debate on the remarks was not yet foreseeable at the time of reporting.

What is certain is that the IGGÖ, as a legally recognized religious community in Austria, enjoys a special status that a simple political statement could not overturn. A dissolution or ban would only be conceivable via an amendment to the Religious Affairs Act or through court proceedings — both scenarios that were explicitly not raised by the minister in her clarification.
