Bauer expresses irritation over IGGÖ President Vural in headscarf debate

The background is the headscarf ban for girls under 14 at Austrian schools, which has been in effect since the current school year. The government had justified the regulation with the argument of protecting girls of this age from pressure from their family environment and ensuring their free development at school. Critics see it as an infringement of religious freedom, while supporters emphasize the protection of children.

Reaction from the union

Ümit Vural had laid out the IGGÖ's position on ZiB 2 and spoken out against the ban. The program was hosted by long-time ZiB 2 anchor Armin Wolf. According to reports, Vural pointed to the self-determination of Muslim families and criticized the symbolism of the law. Individual passages of the interview were discussed intensively on social media.

Bauer emphasized that her criticism was not aimed at Muslims in Austria in general. She argued that the ban was intended to prevent girls from being visibly marked as members of a religious minority and thus excluded as early as primary school age. In this context, the notion of invisibility also came up, which the minister now picked up on.

Support for the minister came from the ranks of the union. FCG chairman Paul Kimberger, who represents the interests of teachers, welcomed Bauer's clear positioning. He saw it as important that schools provide a protected space in which children are not labeled because of their clothing. Within the ÖVP as well, the minister was defended against criticism from the opposition's ranks.

Outlook: Politics and the judiciary

Vural himself has not so far commented directly on Bauer's accusations. The IGGÖ merely said it had taken note of the statements and would continue to advocate for dialogue. A spokesperson for the religious community stressed that the goal was a solution in the interests of all families living in Austria.

The debate comes at a politically tense phase. Chancellor Christian Stocker and the ÖVP are under pressure to defend the education reform against resistance from various directions. At the same time, discontent is growing among parts of the Muslim community, who feel discriminated against by the ban. Observers expect the conflict to continue to occupy domestic politics for weeks to come.

Legally, the issue is unlikely to be settled anyway. Several civil society organizations have already announced that they will file complaints with the Constitutional Court against the headscarf ban. They see a violation of religious freedom as well as of the prohibition of discrimination. Until a decision is made, the debate is therefore likely to continue both politically and judicially.
