Integration and Religious Affairs Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) has expressed irritation over an appearance by the President of the Islamic Faith Community in Austria (IGGÖ), Ümit Vural, on ZiB 2 amid the debate over the headscarf ban for under-14s, which comes into force with the new school year.

What is the debate about?

Bauer made her comments on Tuesday in Vienna, responding to Vural's interview appearance on ZiB 2 the previous evening. The minister described the appearance as irritating and accused the religious community of what she saw as an inadequate engagement with the new law. She said verbatim: "Sobald ein Mädchen ein Kopftuch trägt, wird es unsichtbar." The statement contradicts the position of the IGGÖ, which rejects the ban and points to religious freedom.
