Changeable and unsettled: New week brings rain, thunderstorms, and dropping temperatures to Austria and Germany

Monday: Sunny start, thunderstorms in the afternoon

By evening, extensive cloud fields from a disturbance with some rain reach western Austria. During the night into Tuesday, a pronounced disturbance zone reaches western Austria with partly heavy rain showers. "Am Mittwoch soll es zudem abkühlen," Geosphere Austria announced on Sunday.

On Tuesday, it is partly still sunny in the east ahead of this disturbance, but during the day the thunderstorm tendency increases rapidly. There is a regional risk of severe weather. Early temperatures range between nine and 18 degrees, daytime highs range from west to east from 19 to 29 degrees. Wind freshens with the passage of the disturbance, moderate to brisk from the west.

Tuesday: Severe weather risk in the east

On Wednesday, the disturbance zone lies across Austria and brings widespread dense clouds and rain, with the focus likely between the Zillertal Alps and the Niedere Tauern, as well as in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. In the Northern Alps, the snow line drops in places to around 1,800 metres above sea level. It remains largely dry during the day in the far east and southeast. Early temperatures range from six to 18 degrees, highs from 14 to 21 degrees. Wind blows moderately from the northwest in the east, otherwise it is rather calm.

Wednesday: Cool and rainy

After the passage of the disturbance zone overnight, Thursday brings a mix of sun and cumulus clouds in many areas during the day. In the north and east, rain showers pass through at times with moderate to brisk west to northwesterly winds. On Friday, a few dense cloud fields move across the sky again from the northwest, but overall the sunny impression prevails in many regions. Wind blows weakly to moderately from the west.

The new week also starts changeably in Germany, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) reported. Monday begins bright and dry initially, before weather changes set in during the course of the day. Cloud fields move in from the west, in the afternoon and evening individual, sometimes strong thunderstorms are possible in the western half and at the Alpine edge. Highs are between 24 and 28 degrees in the southeast, between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius in the northwest.

During the night into Tuesday, shower-like rain moves across Germany from west to east, with lows between 16 and 7 degrees. On Tuesday, individual thunderstorms and sometimes stormy gusts are possible especially in the northwest. Rain showers occur widely, south of the Danube more prolonged and heavier rain is possible in places. Temperatures range between 15 and 20 degrees, only the east remains above the 20-degree mark with highs of up to 22 degrees.

Outlook for Thursday and Friday

During the night into Wednesday, it rains south of the Danube and on the North Sea, individual thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. Otherwise, it clears more frequently, temperatures drop to 11 to 5 degrees. On Wednesday, showers and brief thunderstorms occur repeatedly during the day with partly changeable skies, highs reach 15 to 21 degrees. The DWD warns locally of gusty wind from west to southwest in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms. In summary, both weather services expect an unsettled week with showers, thunderstorms, and regional risk of severe weather, before the weather calms down somewhat towards Thursday and Friday, but at a significantly cooler temperature level than at the beginning of the week.
