Chicago, June 13, 2026

The MLS club Chicago Fire is planning a transfer coup with German national player Leon Goretzka, who could move to Major League Soccer together with Robert Lewandowski, according to a report by The Athletic.

According to the report, the 31-year-old midfielder is set to join the former Bundesliga star and ex-Bayern player Robert Lewandowski in Chicago. Goretzka's contract at FC Bayern expires in just under three weeks, on June 30. Lewandowski, with whom Goretzka once played 127 matches for FC Bayern before the latter moved to FC Barcelona, has long been on the radar of the MLS club. His contract with the Catalans also expires this month. Lewandowski could sign with Chicago for two or three years.

Designated Player rule as obstacle

Should the striker sign a contract with Chicago Fire, however, there would be no spot left for a so-called "Designated Player," wrote The Athletic. MLS clubs are allowed to sign three such Designated Players, whose salaries can exceed the league's salary cap. However, according to The Athletic, clubs regularly find ways to circumvent this limit. Lewandowski (37) has a market value of 7.00 million euros.
