Berlin, July 16, 2026
Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's "Odyssey" opens in German cinemas on July 16, 2026, and is the first blockbuster to be filmed entirely using state-of-the-art IMAX cameras.
Plot and cast
The story picks up after the Trojan War and follows Odysseus on his ten-year journey home to the island kingdom of Ithaca, where his wife Penelope fends off suitors. Along the way, the hero encounters sea monsters, cyclopes, sirens and angry gods. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway and Lupita Nyong'o also in the cast. Nyong'o takes on a dual role as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra.
The film runs three hours and carries an FSK 16 age rating in Germany. Production-wise, "The Odyssey" relies on large-format film negatives, which store more visual information and thus provide greater sharpness and an expanded field of view. However, even at IMAX cinemas in Dortmund, Oberhausen, Düsseldorf, Bochum and Bad Oeynhausen, the image will not be shown in the ideal 1.43:1 aspect ratio.
