The negotiations of the Austrian coalition on a reform of military service have stalled because the role of civilian service in particular is disputed between the ÖVP, SPÖ, and Neos.
The black-red-pink coalition in Austria has been working for weeks on a comprehensive reform of military service. While agreement could be reached on the basic direction of the package, significant questions about the future design of civilian service remain open. This is reported by Austrian media, citing negotiation circles.
According to this, the main争议 is how civilian service should be embedded in the new military service model. According to information from the negotiations, the SPÖ advocates an alternative model that explicitly does not rely on an extension of military service. Specifically, the SPÖ instead proposes a so-called "9 plus 2" model with mandatory exercises, as emerges from negotiation documents.
