Colombia claims group win against Portugal – Ronaldo faces Modric in the Round of 16

Portugal also had chances in the opening period but could not beat Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. In the 39th minute, Bruno Fernandes failed to convert from a good position, and 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo attempted a bicycle kick in the same minute. Shortly afterward, João Félix headed a volley over the bar in the 42nd minute, and Ruben Neves shot wide in the 40th. Ronaldo registered only 18 touches in the first half and did not score.

Shortly afterward, Ríos missed a clear chance in the 62nd minute, and Gustavo Puerta also failed to convert in the 67th.

Second Half: Clear chances at both ends

In the 66th minute Córdoba almost put Colombia in front, but could not finish. A header from Davinson Sánchez following a cross was ruled out for a marginal offside. In the 80th minute Ronaldo floated a cross toward substitute Rafael Leão, but the delivery fell short. Ronaldo, who played the full match, also shot well wide from a position that looked offside in the 60th minute and curled a free kick from around 30 meters straight at the Colombian keeper.

In the closing stages Luis Suárez missed a chance in the 88th minute that could have been a last-minute winner. The referee was Faghani from Iran. Colombia received a yellow card through Gustavo Puerta; Portugal went unbooked.

Head coach Nestor Lorenzo was pleased with his team's performance after the match: „Ich möchte der Mannschaft zu ihrem Einsatz gratulieren, denn die Jungs waren heute überragend. Portugal coach Roberto Martínez acknowledged the opponent's quality: „Wir müssen anerkennen, dass Kolumbien ein Spitzenteam ist. In the knockout phase Colombia will face a third-placed team on Saturday at 3:30 a.m. in Kansas City – currently projected to be Ghana. Portugal will meet Croatia on Friday at 1:00 a.m. in Toronto. That sets up a round-of-16 showdown between former world players of the year Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric.

Both teams lined up with their nominal first-choice formations. Colombia played with Vargas – S. Arias, Sánchez, Lucumí, Machado – J. Arias, Lerma, Puerta – J. Rodríguez, Córdoba, Díaz; the substitutes used were Muñoz, Castaño, Ríos, Quintero and Suárez. Portugal started with D. Costa – Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes – R. Neves, Vitinha – Neto, Fernandes, Félix – Ronaldo; coming on were Dalot, Nunes, J. Neves, S. Costa and Leão.

The draw ensured that while the designated Group K leader comes from Colombia, Portugal heads into a tough round-of-16 assignment against Croatia as runners-up. Both coaches stressed after the match that the knockout round will require different qualities.

The 2026 World Cup is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico; the Group K matches took place, among other venues, in the Greater Miami area, where on Saturday evening Colombian and Portuguese fans experienced a high-quality, if goalless, football match.
