Dallas, July 6, 2026

Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 (0-0) in the World Cup Round of 16 in Dallas and reached the quarterfinals with a goal by substitute Mikel Merino in the first minute of stoppage time; for the 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, it was his final game at a World Cup.

In front of a sold-out crowd of 70,649 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, the Spanish side prevailed 1-0 against Portugal on Monday evening (local time). Referee Anthony Taylor from England, who had already officiated as the main referee at the two previous European Championships as well as at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, blew the whistle in the hotly contested match, in which both teams had entered the tournament without a defeat.
