Sarajevo, July 11, 2026
On July 11, 2026, Bosnia and Herzegovina commemorated the Srebrenica genocide — in which more than 8,300 Bosniak men and boys were killed in 1995 — with nationwide sirens and a minute of silence.
Memorial Ceremony in Potocari
In Sarajevo and throughout the Sarajevo Canton, public life came to a standstill at midday for several minutes. At 12 o'clock, sirens wailed, traffic came to a halt, and thousands of people paid tribute to the victims of the genocide — considered the worst war crime on European soil since World War II. This year's memorial ceremony marked the 31st anniversary of the events of July 1995.
At the memorial cemetery in Potocari, a small village near Srebrenica, ten newly identified victims were laid to rest, according to authorities. Thousands of mourners attended the ceremony. Some of the remains had been discovered in mass graves as early as 1997, others only four years ago. The identification of the dead continues to this day.
