The justice ministers of the federal and state governments agreed at their conference in Hamburg on several measures to better protect women and children from sexual violence, including a significantly longer statute of limitations and new reporting requirements.
The Conference of Justice Ministers in Hamburg was entirely focused on the fight against sexual violence. Host Anna Gallina, Hamburg's Senator for Justice from Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, spoke of a still significant protection gap: „Insofern muss noch mehr passieren." Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD) came to Hamburg as a guest and reaffirmed the reform course she has long pursued. „Wir müssen insbesondere Frauen vor sexuellen Übergriffen besser schützen", she said. The current five-year statute of limitations for serious sexual offenses is „definitiv zu kurz". „Es ist Zeit, dass wir das ändern", said Hubig.
