Nuremberg, August 27, 2026
The Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM) is registering a slight recovery in consumer sentiment in Germany for August 2026, while Santander economists are simultaneously pointing to ongoing inflation risks in the energy sector.
Consumer sentiment in Germany brightened noticeably in August, according to the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM). The indicator, which the institute collects together with the market research company GfK, edged up slightly compared with the previous month. Consumer expert Rolf Bürkl of NIM spoke of a cautiously optimistic basic attitude among private households, even though the level remains below the figures of earlier years.
Several factors are likely to have contributed to the sentiment, according to the institute's assessment: lower inflation expectations for the coming months, a more stable assessment of personal income development, and a somewhat reduced propensity to save. Many consumers were somewhat less reluctant about major purchases than they had been in early summer.
