Berlin, 29 May 2026

Prosecutors have filed charges against a 23-year-old man who allegedly set fire to his brother's leased car in Berlin-Schöneberg, triggering an explosion that left him injured.

The incident occurred in early October 2025, when the suspect reportedly poured gasoline inside the vehicle before igniting it. The resulting explosion caused injuries to the 23-year-old himself, according to investigators.

A spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office confirmed that the man has since confessed to the act. He was arrested shortly after the incident and initially placed in pre-trial detention.

Confession and Arrest

Authorities believe the motive may have been financial. The car was a leased vehicle registered to the suspect's brother, and the alleged arson could have been an attempt to escape the associated costs.
