The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has seized around 200,000 counterfeit condoms that had been smuggled from China into the EU and sold in several European countries under the name of a well-known brand.
According to the authorities, the counterfeit condoms were marketed under the name and logo of a well-known brand. OLAF estimates the market value of the seized goods at more than 200,000 euros.
As the agency further announced, initial tips from national authorities triggered the investigation. Subsequently, OLAF traced the smuggling route of the fake condoms and, together with customs authorities in Romania, Serbia and Spain, examined the seized products. The Brussels-based agency did not disclose the exact brand name upon request.
Background of the Investigation
Laboratory tests confirmed that the goods do not meet EU quality requirements for medical products. Specifically, this concerns tests for durability, stability and contamination. The counterfeits were falsely declared as toys in the shipping documents in order to disguise their import.
