In its federal accounts published on Friday, the Court of Audit criticized the lack of concrete structural reforms in the federal budget and called for swift action ahead of the 2028 financial equalization negotiations.

In its report on the 2025 budget execution, the Court of Audit states that "konkrete Schritte hierzu nicht zu erkennen" sei, "auch nicht im Budgetentwurf für 2027 und 2028". The auditors see a "Budgetloch" and demand "echte Strukturreformen". They describe the window for such reforms as "knapp, nämlich bis zu den Finanzausgleichsverhandlungen 2028".

According to the accounts, the federal budget recorded a net result of minus 13.56 billion euros in 2025, with the net financing balance amounting to minus 14.37 billion euros. Financial debt rose by 4.6 percent to 313 billion euros despite the budget consolidation that had begun. The general government public deficit amounted to 4.2 percent of gross domestic product, and the public debt ratio stood at 81.5 percent.
