A Court of Audit report published at the end of March and environmental researcher Thilo Hofmann of the University of Vienna warn that possibly hundreds to thousands of sites in Austria may be contaminated with PFAS, while only two areas have so far been registered as contaminated sites.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, are far more widespread in Austria than previously assumed, according to experts. A report by the Court of Audit published at the end of March pointed out, among other things, that "große Herausforderungen durch neue Schadstoffe" (major challenges from new pollutants), alias PFAS, had become known more recently. Thilo Hofmann, who works at the Center for Microbiology and Environmental System Science at the University of Vienna and is Vice President of the Association for Contaminated Site Management, draws on comparative figures from Switzerland for an initial estimate.
