The business information service Creditreform has reported in an analysis published on Thursday a decline in business bankruptcies in Austria, but at the same time a significant increase in private insolvencies. The balance thus diverges in two directions: while companies evidently needed court-supervised restructuring less frequently, the number of over-indebted private households grew noticeably.

Creditreform Managing Director Gerhard Weinhofer explained the rise in private insolvencies by pointing to the expiration of a particularly simple and quick debt relief option for private individuals. He thereby qualified the interpretation that the rise necessarily reflects widespread financial distress among the population.
