Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday for his drama ‘Fjord’.
“Die Goldene Palme der Filmfestspiele Cannes geht an den rumänischen Regisseur Cristian Mungiu für seinen Film 'Fjord',” the festival organizers announced during the closing ceremony on the Côte d’Azur. Mungiu, already a laureate of the prize in 2007, returned to the Croisette with a project that had been kept tightly under wraps until its premiere.
The victory solidifies Mungiu’s reputation as one of European cinema’s most rigorous storytellers. Known for unflinching social realism and long, meticulously composed takes, his previous works have often examined the moral gray zones of post-communist Romanian society.
