Cannes, 23 May 2026
Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or for his drama “Fjord” at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.
The film, starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, tells the story of a married couple whose children are taken from them by Norwegian child services after they are spanked, setting off a morally layered conflict. “Fjord” competed against 21 other films in the official selection of the festival, which has awarded its top prize since 1946.
The win marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or, making him only the 10th filmmaker in history to claim the award twice. His harrowing abortion drama “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” previously took the honor in 2007. This year’s jury, led by a yet unnamed president, chose “Fjord” from a field that included several politically charged works.
