Zagreb, 13 July 2026

The Croatian Football Federation has presented Slaven Bilić as the new head coach of the national team, thereby settling the succession of Zlatko Dalić, whose contract had not been extended after the team's round-of-16 exit at the World Cup against Portugal.

The presentation took place on Monday in Zagreb, after the federation's executive committee had voted unanimously in favour of Bilić on the proposal of president Marijan Kustić. Federation president Kustić described the 57-year-old as a „gefeierten Nationalspieler, der mittlerweile über einen reichen Erfahrungsschatz als Trainer und Manager verfügt".

Kustić: „größtmögliche Ehre" for the federation

Speaking at his presentation, Bilić himself referred to the „größtmöglichen Ehre" and announced that he would bring the necessary energy to lead the team back to the world's top. He said: „Es liegt an mir, die nötige Energie, den Ehrgeiz und die Entschlossenheit einzubringen, damit Kroatien weiterhin zur Fußball-Elite zählt."

The change on the touchline comes just over a week after Croatia's disappointing exit at the ongoing World Cup. In the round of 16, the team around the 40-year-old Luka Modrić lost 1:2 to Portugal, after which Dalić did not extend his expiring contract. The 59-year-old had managed the team for nine years and overseen 111 matches.
