Toronto, 03 July 2026

Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 (0-0) in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Toronto and will face Spain on Monday in Dallas in the Round of 16.

In front of 43,036 spectators in Toronto, the Round of 16 clash between Portugal and Croatia kept the fans and everyone involved on the edge of their seats deep into stoppage time. Cristiano Ronaldo, with his converted penalty in the 68th minute, not only became the oldest scorer in a World Cup knockout stage but also sparked the comeback after Ivan Perisic (53rd) had put Croatia ahead. The 41-year-old superstar, whose spot-kick moved him into outright second place behind Lionel Messi, still experienced the evening with mixed feelings.
