Crown Prince Haakon of Norway spoke candidly on Tuesday about the worsening health of his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, revealing that she is now dependent on supplemental oxygen and faces an uncertain future.
Speaking on the sidelines of an award ceremony in Oslo, the heir to the Norwegian throne did not hide his distress. "The Crown Princess is seriously ill, and her condition has deteriorated significantly recently. I am worried about her health," Haakon told reporters.
The 52-year-old royal has been battling a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis since her diagnosis was made public in 2018. The incurable disease causes progressive scarring of the lungs, leading to severe shortness of breath.
Haakon detailed the daily reality of the situation. "She uses oxygen in her everyday life, and that helps somewhat," he said, adding a sobering note: "But of course, it is not a completely satisfactory solution." Mette-Marit has been seen in public on multiple recent occasions with a portable oxygen device.
