A widespread cyberattack targeting healthcare providers has exposed sensitive data of more than 100,000 patients across multiple German states, with authorities scrambling to contain the fallout.
The attack, which primarily affected university hospitals in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia, saw hackers steal names, birthdates, addresses, and in some cases billing information of patients. The University Hospital Freiburg was hardest hit, with data from 54,000 individuals compromised.
Cybersecurity expert Mirko Ross criticized the four-to-six week delay in notifying affected individuals: 'In the real world of cyberattacks, these are far too long time periods.' He explained that attackers could use this window to target victims through phishing emails or fraudulent messages posing as healthcare providers.
