Dead 15-Year-Old in Hamburg-Bramfeld: Mother to Be Presented to Remand Judge

The police had come upon the trail of the girl because of a missing person case, according to its own statements. The teenager lived in a youth facility, according to information from the authorities, and had been reported missing on Saturday evening because she had not returned there as agreed. The investigators then followed up on the mother's apartment in Bramfeld, where the 15-year-old was found lifeless.

The 43-year-old, who had lost custody of her daughter according to the situation service, was provisionally arrested in the apartment. The police statement reads: „Die Einsatzkräfte nahmen in der Wohnung die 43-jährige Mutter vorläufig fest.“ During the course of the day, she was to be presented to a remand judge for a decision on pretrial detention. According to the investigators, there are indications that the mother may be mentally ill.

The police initially deployed the permanent criminal investigation service, but during the course of the night the homicide unit took over in close coordination with the homicide division of the Hamburg public prosecutor's office. The latter is now taking over the further investigations into the circumstances of death. The police initially made no statements on Sunday regarding the exact cause of death and also did not comment on whether there are indications of foul play by the mother.

The German Press Agency (dpa) and NDR had reported on the case on Sunday. NDR 90,3 had already informed about the incident before the official police statement. A resident who had contacted the radio station described that many people in the neighborhood are shocked. The homicide unit is asking witnesses who made suspicious observations in the area of Bramfeld during the night from Saturday to Sunday to contact the police. Tip-offs can also be given to the Hamburg police's tip hotline. The investigators are also examining whether there were indications in the past of a risk to the girl.

The Hamburg Youth Welfare Office stated that it would closely monitor the ongoing investigations and would be available for a later review of the case.
