A petition in Vienna demands that Fiaker horses no longer be deployed at temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius and above, while the animals are already being fitted with sensors to record heat stress.

In Vienna, a debate has flared up over heat protection for Fiaker horses. The trigger is an ongoing petition calling for a so-called heat-off for the animals from a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. The initiative is also being picked up in media reports by the online portal oe24, where the topic was published on July 5, 2026.

Fiakers are a traditional tourist offering in Vienna's inner city. Horses pull carriages with passengers through the city area, especially around St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg area, and the Ringstrasse. In high-summer temperatures, however, the animals are under particular heat strain, which is why animal welfare organizations have been calling for stricter regulations for years.
