Several Democratic lawmakers are calling for answers after families of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln raised concerns about deteriorating living conditions and worsening mental health during the carrier's deployment to the Middle East.

Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona said the conditions described by sailors' relatives pointed to a breakdown in basic stewardship of the crew. "That's not proper leadership," Gallego said, criticizing what he characterized as a slow and opaque response from Navy officials to reports of overcrowded berthing, sanitation problems, and strain on sailors' wellbeing during the deployment.
