Federal regulators are reviewing so-called mention markets on prediction-market platforms such as Kalshi, two people with direct knowledge of the probe told NPR.
The two sources spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity. They did not specify which federal agency is conducting the review or how far it has progressed. NPR's reporting did not include a response from Kalshi or from any agency in the verified facts provided.
What are mention markets?
Mention markets are a category of prediction-market contracts that allow users to wager on whether a specific name, phrase or topic will be mentioned in a defined setting, such as a press conference, earnings call or political speech. The format has drawn scrutiny as prediction-market operators expand into contracts tied to news events and political figures.
