The Austrian Society for Dermatology and Venereology (ÖGDV) has presented new recommendations for the early detection of skin cancer, which are based on an individual risk assessment rather than on routine mass screenings.

Risk assessment from age 18

The new guidelines provide that adults aged 18 and over should first have their personal melanoma risk assessed – either by a dermatologist or a correspondingly trained specialist. Based on this, it is decided whether further regular check-up examinations are necessary or whether self-monitoring is sufficient. With this, the professional society aims to align early detection more closely with scientific evidence.

First author Peter Kölblinger, Chair of the Melanoma and Dermatologic Oncology Working Group of the ÖGDV, emphasized that the goal is not less but more targeted prevention: "Ziel ist nicht weniger Vorsorge, sondern eine gezieltere, qualitätsgesicherte und evidenzbasierte Früherkennung". Peter Kölblinger of the University Clinic for Dermatology and Allergology Salzburg, Paracelsus Medical University of Salzburg, also explained that, apart from the recommended self- and partner examinations, no further routine medical examinations for early skin cancer detection should be carried out up to age 50.
