DFB Federal Court Rejects 1860 Munich's Appeal: Relegation to the Regionalliga Final

TSV 1860 Munich is therefore forced to play in the Regionalliga. TSV Havelse will take the vacated spot in the 3. Liga. On the pitch, the Munich side had earned qualification for Germany's third-highest division, but failed to meet the economic admission requirements of the German Football Association (DFB).

In the meantime, the fallen Regionalliga club has entered insolvency proceedings. The club's financial problems have thus continued to deepen. The association faces an uncertain future and must simultaneously organize match operations in the Regionalliga.

Insolvency and an Uncertain Future

The team is currently being looked after on an interim basis by Alper Kayabunar, who is serving as interim coach. The search for a permanent sporting solution is therefore running in parallel with the financial restructuring efforts.

Parallel to the final end at DFB level, another coaching change in the Regionalliga is attracting attention. Sven Bender is leaving third-division relegated side SpVgg Unterhaching – and just two weeks before the start of the Regionalliga season, no less.

Coaching Change at Unterhaching

The 37-year-old Bender, a former Germany international, had only recently taken charge as head coach at Unterhaching. SpVgg confirmed his departure on Wednesday afternoon, after media reports had previously aligned on the story. President Manfred Schwabl and Bender had concluded in a joint discussion that their visions for the future sporting direction could no longer be reconciled.

In SpVgg Unterhaching's statement: "Nach einem gemeinsamen Gespräch mit Präsident Manfred Schwabl wurde deutlich, dass die unterschiedlichen Auffassungen über die zukünftige sportliche Ausrichtung und Zielsetzung des Vereins nicht mehr in Einklang zu bringen waren. Gemeinsam entschied man sich daher, den eingeschlagenen Weg künftig getrennt fortzusetzen."

In German football circles, speculation is meanwhile rife as to whether Bender could join the "Lions," who are currently heading into the Regionalliga season with interim coach Kayabunar. There are no concrete confirmations of such considerations so far.

What is certain: TSV 1860 Munich must make the drop to the fourth division while simultaneously coping with the financial consequences of the insolvency proceedings. The Regionalliga Bayern season will be a test of character for the traditional club.

With its decision, the DFB Federal Court has also broken a lance for the strict interpretation of the economic admission criteria. Even though the team's sporting success is undisputed, the club ultimately lacked the necessary financial foundation.
