DFB National Team Coach Question: Klopp Announces Agreement with Red Bull – Contract Signing Expected on Friday

He also complained that too many details had leaked in recent days and that not all media reports had been true. The DFB itself chose a restrained tone toward the German Press Agency (dpa): „Der DFB kommentiert den aktuellen Verhandlungsstand mit Jürgen Klopp nicht. Eine finale Entscheidung treffen die zuständigen Gremien."

Background: The World Cup Debacle and Nagelsmann's Departure

According to consistent media reports, including from Bild and Sky, the contract signing is scheduled for the coming Friday. In the best case and provided the last contractual details are clarified, Klopp is to be presented to the public in Frankfurt on the same day as the 13th national team coach in German football history. The contract is to run until the 2030 World Cup and thus cover a complete World Cup cycle.

Klopp would thus take over sporting responsibility for the national team exactly two years after the historic group-stage exit of the German team at a World Cup – the very selection that once shaped him as a player in Mainz. He would be the thirteenth head coach in the history of the DFB team since the founding of the Federal Republic and the first former Liverpool and BVB championship coach in this position in a long time.

Red Bull's Waiver of a Transfer Fee

The background to the personnel change is the disappointing performance of the German team at the World Cup, which took place in the USA. Julian Nagelsmann's team was eliminated in the round of 16 after the group stage – according to reports, against Paraguay – which subsequently triggered a personnel upheaval at the DFB. Nagelsmann, whose contract would originally have run for two more years until 2028, had to vacate his post. Both sides are silent about the exact circumstances, particularly the financial arrangements.

Remarkably, according to information from the reports, the DFB does not have to pay a transfer fee to Red Bull. The Austrian beverage conglomerate is letting Klopp go without conditions from his contract as "Head of Global Soccer," which runs until 2029. This was made possible through a personal conversation between Klopp and Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff. In this talk, both sides reportedly agreed on a "generous arrangement," as Klopp called it. This also eliminates the initially speculated variant that Klopp could remain on board at Red Bull as a consultant or brand ambassador.

The Summit Meeting in New York

This was preceded by a summit meeting on the penultimate Saturday in New York, attended by Klopp as well as DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and his Vice Hans-Joachim Watzke. According to reports, a fundamental agreement was reached at this meeting on a contract for Klopp as Nagelsmann's successor, to run until the 2030 World Cup. However, at the time of the interview, open questions remained regarding the contractual modalities with Red Bull as well as sponsorship issues.

The fact that the DFB was seeking a solution with Red Bull also had financial reasons. The association was keen to avoid a possible million-dollar compensation payment to the conglomerate. The designated national team coach himself took a sober view of what lies ahead on Sunday evening despite all the anticipation.
