The leadership of the German Football Association (DFB) has reached agreement with preferred candidate Jürgen Klopp on key points of a potential contract as national team coach following a multi-hour meeting in New York. Talks with his current employer Red Bull are to continue next week.

DFB and Klopp speak of constructive exchange

As the German Football Association announced on Saturday, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held an initial intensive discussion with Jürgen Klopp in the US during German nighttime hours on Friday regarding the possible takeover of the national team coach position. "Bei dem konstruktiven Austausch wurde eine Verständigung über wesentliche Eckpunkte eines potenziellen Vertrages erzielt," the association's statement said. "Beide Seiten sind zuversichtlich, dass die Verhandlungen – vorbehaltlich einer Einigung mit Klopps derzeitigem Arbeitgeber Red Bull – letztlich erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden können." Any potential contract would ultimately need to be approved in a joint meeting of the supervisory board and shareholders' meeting of DFB GmbH and Co. KG.

According to information from "Bild," the DFB representatives met with Klopp and his advisor Marc Kosicke on Friday afternoon at a hotel near New York's John F. Kennedy Airport. The talks in the hotel's conference room reportedly began at 2:10 p.m. local time and lasted more than four hours; at 6:43 p.m., the coach was said to have given some autographs in the lobby in a relaxed and good mood before leaving the hotel. ZDF sports director Rudi Völler had previously stated that in a longer phone call it had quickly become clear "schnell herauskristallisiert, dass das am Ende auch funktionieren kann und wird."
