Houston, 14 June 2026

The German national football team plays its opening match at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday evening (kickoff 7:00 p.m. German time) at NRG Stadium in Houston against World Cup newcomers Curaçao.

The first group match in Group E marks the start of a World Cup in which Germany is not among the top favorites. National team coach Julian Nagelsmann described the situation at a press conference in Houston on Saturday evening as a "DFB-Pokal situation" and warned about the opponent: "Das ist eine DFB-Pokal-Situation. David gegen Goliath. Die Spieler haben alle eine gute Ausbildung und können unbeschwert in das Turnier gehen. Das macht einen Gegner immer gefährlich."

Curaçao is taking part in a football World Cup finals for the first time. The island nation, with 160,000 inhabitants, is the smallest World Cup participant in history and, ranked 82nd in the FIFA World Rankings, is a clear outsider. The team is coached by 78-year-old Dick Advocaat, who led the team through CONCACAF qualification and had returned to the role after a break for personal reasons.
