A survey by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) of just under 28,000 employees shows that 40 percent of workers do not believe they will be able to perform their job until the statutory retirement age.
The results were first published on Sunday by the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe and broadcast on July 5, 2026 on the Deutschlandfunk program. According to the findings, four out of ten employees in Germany doubt they can carry out their current job until retirement. Only 53 percent of those surveyed assume they will be able to perform their job without restrictions until the statutory retirement age.
Particularly pessimistic are people working in skilled trades, nursing, or educational professions. In structural construction occupations, 66 percent of employees do not expect to be able to work until retirement. In the sanitary, heating, and air-conditioning sector, the figure is as high as 72 percent.
