The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) is demanding, in the debate over pension reform, mandatory occupational pension provision for all workers and plans to present corresponding key points by the end of the month.
Coverage gap of 20 million employees
DGB chair Yasmin Fahimi justified the initiative with a significant coverage gap: around 20 million employees in Germany did not have occupational pension provision, she told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). The reason lies „in der Regel, weil sie in Betrieben beschäftigt seien, die nicht tarifgebunden sind." The trade unions are ready to regulate the occupational pension collectively for all employees, „und zwar auf Basis von Tarifverträgen."
