Willemstad, Curaçao – May 11, 2026
Dick Advocaat has made a dramatic return as Curaçao’s national team manager, stepping back into the role just weeks before their World Cup debut against Germany.
Return of a Veteran Coach
The 78-year-old Dutchman, who led Curaçao to their historic World Cup qualification last November, takes over from his compatriot Fred Rutten. Advocaat had initially resigned in February to care for his seriously ill daughter, leaving Rutten to take charge. However, after just a few months, Rutten has now departed following what the Curaçao Football Federation (FFK) described as "open and constructive" talks with federation president Gilbert Martina.
Advocaat’s return comes at a critical moment, with Curaçao set to face Germany in their first-ever World Cup match on June 6. His experience at major tournaments—including leading the Netherlands in 1994 and South Korea in 2006—could prove vital for the Caribbean side.
