Novak Djokovic on Sunday reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the 17th time with a 7:6 (8:6), 6:3, 3:6, 6:3 win in the round of 16 against Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin, surpassing Roger Federer's previous record with his 106th victory at the All England Club.

The match on Centre Court began under scorching sun, and Djokovic came under early pressure: Down 2:5 in his view, he saved two set points in the first set and forced a tiebreak, which he ultimately won 10:8. The first set thus carried weight, and the Serb held his nerve in the decisive phase.

The 39-year-old then took more and more control. In the second set, Djokovic impressed with fine serve-and-volley attacks that brought him the 6:3 set win. The match at that point appeared clearly tailored to his rhythm before Safiullin fought back.

Difficult start under scorching sun

In the third set, Djokovic briefly lost his composure after conceding the break at 2:4 and slammed the ball forcefully onto the tarp on the other side of the court. For this misconduct, the Serb received loud boos from the Centre Court crowd. Safiullin had shortly before received medical treatment, which further heightened the tension.
