The Governor of Burgenland, Hans Peter Doskozil, has openly called on the SPÖ federal party leader, Andreas Babler, to resign should the federal party's polling numbers not improve.
At a press conference on Thursday in Eisenstadt, Doskozil reiterated the demands he had previously formulated in an APA interview to the party leadership. He insisted on a more pointed political line and on regaining credibility and trust among the population. The SPÖ has been struggling with weak polling numbers for months, with the gap to the ÖVP clearly evident in the most recent surveys.
Asked the crucial question of whether he personally demanded the resignation of the federal party leader, Doskozil answered unambiguously: „Wenn er dieser Aufgabe nicht gewachsen ist, dann muss er natürlich, so wie es in jedem Betrieb, jedem Unternehmen, auch in der politischen Bewegung ist, da muss er die Konsequenzen ziehen." With this, the Governor of Burgenland intensified the public pressure on Babler in an unusually direct manner.
