Doskozil returns to office after larynx surgery and speaks of a "special moment"

During his absence, "deutlich über hundert Regierungsbeschlüsse" had been passed in the recovery phase, Doskozil said. He did not publicly comment on ongoing government business or on an announced internal power struggle within the SPÖ, in which Vienna's provincial party leader Königsberger-Ludwig is challenging Hergovich, upon his return.

Now it was a case of "üben, üben, üben", Doskozil explained. Learning the new voice was "wie das Erlernen eines Instruments", his attending physician Andreas Dietz had said earlier with regard to the wound-healing process. How long the voice training will continue is currently unclear.

Political significance of the return

In a photo posted on social networks, Doskozil can be seen wearing a red jersey with the inscription "Welcome back" and "Dosko". The picture shows him smiling among staff members and was widely picked up as a sign of his recovery.

In Burgenland, the return of the governor is met with relief, as the operation and the subsequent recovery phase had attracted political as well as personal attention. Official government business had been continued in the meantime by the office of the governor and the state government.

From the governor's office, it was said that Doskozil wanted to be gradually reintroduced to meetings and appointments in the coming days. As a spokesperson emphasised, recovery should continue to take priority and the schedule should be adjusted accordingly.

Outlook for the coming weeks

Medically, ossification of the larynx is a rare, progressive ossification of the laryngeal structures that can increasingly restrict the voice. Surgical removal or restoration is considered a complex procedure followed by speech therapy support, which Doskozil is now undergoing.

The Burgenland governor is regarded within the SPÖ as one of the most defining figures of recent years and is known for his direct, often confrontational political line. His return to the office is also linked to the expectation that he could become more involved in national political debates – for example with regard to the announced SPÖ power struggle in Vienna.

The next official stage on the way back to a full working routine is expected to follow in the coming weeks, according to the state government. Doskozil then also wants to resume public engagements in Burgenland.
