Mondsee, July 5, 2026

A 57-year-old mountaineer from the district of Bludenz in Vorarlberg climbed the Drachenwand via ferrata at Mondsee (district of Vöcklabruck, Upper Austria) on Saturday while severely intoxicated and without via ferrata equipment, and had to be brought down to the valley by mountain rescue.

Starting point at the Attersee

According to police, the man from Vorarlberg had already been on the move in the early morning. According to his own account, he had set off at 4 a.m., first hiking from the Attersee via the Brennerriesensteig to the Dachsteinblick in the Höllengebirge. After the two tours, he drove to St. Lorenz am Mondsee and stopped for a drink.

Afterward, he reportedly decided to add the Drachenwand via ferrata as a third tour. The man from Vorarlberg is believed to have climbed the Drachenwand via ferrata beforehand without via ferrata equipment. At the summit of the Drachenwand at Mondsee (district of Vöcklabruck), he was then moving about while severely intoxicated.

Attentive alpinist raised the alarm

A second alpinist noticed, according to police, that the man was stumbling about in such a way that an accident had to be feared. The attentive mountaineer then reacted and correctly assessed the situation.
