DSN leader Sylvia Mayer supports Stocker's push for a ban on political Islam

In an interview with the daily newspaper "Heute," the Chancellor reaffirmed his plan. "If religion is used politically, we must oppose it with full force," Stocker declared. He announced that he would advocate for a ban on political Islam at the constitutional level.

The DSN, an organization that sees itself as a non-partisan platform for members of the Austrian Armed Forces, is thus aligning itself with a position that is being controversially debated in Austrian domestic politics. In her statement, Mayer pointed to the necessity of defending democratic fundamental values against any form of religious indoctrination.

The background to the debate is a conflict that has been smoldering for months between the ÖVP under Stocker and the FPÖ under its parliamentary group leader Herbert Kickl. In recent weeks, the Freedom Party had repeatedly called for a stricter separation of state and religion, and in doing so also brought tougher measures into play.

Reactions from opposition and academia

From within the ÖVP's circles, it was said that Stocker wanted to sharpen the profile of the People's Party on security and values policy with his push. A party spokesperson confirmed that the issues of equal rights and constitutional principles were "the top priority." However, concrete draft legislation has not yet been presented.

The reactions from the opposition were muted. Kickl himself has not so far commented directly on the plans, but referred to earlier statements in which he had called for "clear rules against any form of political instrumentalization of religion." Observers interpret this as tactical approval while simultaneously positioning the FPÖ as a supposedly more consistent force.

Constitutional lawyers were cautious when asked. A ban on "political Islam" would be difficult to delineate legally, since the term is not clearly defined either in Austrian law or in the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court. Without a precise definition, there is a risk that practicing Muslims could also be restricted in their freedom of religion, one expert warned.

Open questions and outlook

In her statement, Mayer pointed out that the DSN, as a non-partisan soldiers' organization, bears a special responsibility for the democratic fundamental order. The Chancellor's proposal would be accompanied "constructively, but critically," she announced. This marks the first time the DSN has publicly positioned itself in a socio-political debate beyond defense policy issues.

It remains unclear how the push is to be pursued parliamentarily in the coming weeks. Neither the Federal Chancellery nor the parliamentary groups of the coalition parties have so far announced a timetable for possible legislative initiatives. The debate is therefore likely only at its beginning.

The discussion comes at a time of heightened societal sensitivity. Opinion polls in recent weeks had shown that questions surrounding migration, integration, and religious freedom are highly polarizing among the Austrian population. Observers expect that the issue will significantly shape the election campaign in the coming year.
