Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS announces renewed ESC boycott

AVROTROS had already opted out of last year's Eurovision Song Contest. At the time, several European broadcasters had voiced concerns about the political dimension of the competition. The EBU subsequently initiated a review process and announced changes to the rules on participation and the evaluation of entries.

Reactions in the Netherlands

Dutch public broadcaster NPO, of which AVROTROS is a part, supports the broadcaster's position. In a statement, it said the credibility of the competition was a central concern that must not be tampered with. It would continue to closely monitor developments.

With the renewed boycott, the Netherlands loses the opportunity to submit an entry for the ESC and to take part in the international competition. The country is one of the founding members of the music contest, which was launched in 1956, and has won three times in its history, most recently in 2019.

The decision triggered a broad debate in the Netherlands. While critics welcomed the move as an important signal for the independence of the competition, cultural and music figures warned of damage to the country's image and a weakening of the European music scene. The issue was also controversially discussed on social networks.

Position of the European Broadcasting Union

The EBU said it took the concerns of participating broadcasters seriously and would continue the dialogue with national broadcasters. A statement on possible consequences for the next edition of the competition was initially not forthcoming. According to the association, preparations for the ESC are continuing regardless of national decisions.

It remains unclear whether other broadcasters will follow the Dutch example. In recent months, several public broadcasters in Europe have already signalled that they are critically monitoring developments. The coming weeks are likely to show whether the EBU can satisfy a broader base with its reforms.

Outlook on the next ESC

AVROTROS's position remains clear: as long as the structural questions surrounding the independence and neutrality of the competition are not resolved, it will not take part in the ESC, the broadcaster said. Participation in future editions is also conceivable only after a fundamental reassessment of the situation.

The final decision on the line-up of participants lies with the EBU. National broadcasters must declare their intention by the official registration deadline for the next edition. Observers expect that the debate over the direction of the competition will continue to accompany the ESC for years to come.
