DW correspondent Alican Uludağ could face more than four years in prison under Article 299 of Turkey's penal code for allegedly insulting the president, with his trial set to resume on May 18.

The journalist had criticized Turkey's government for releasing alleged members of the Islamic State group, according to reports. Uludağ has denied the accusations against him, telling news site T24: 'My conscience is clear.'

DW Director General Barbara Massing expressed relief that Uludağ was released after three months in detention but called for the case to be dropped immediately. 'Alican Uludağ was unjustly detained and was simply doing his job as a court reporter,' she said.

The arrest has drawn criticism from press freedom organizations. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) described Uludağ's February detention as 'part of judicial harassment against serious journalists' in Turkey.
