The CEO of the energy group E.ON, Leonhard Birnbaum, has ruled out full protection of Germany's power grids against attacks, citing a series of arson attacks on substations and cable bridges in Reutlingen and Berlin.

Birnbaum's comparison with the police

In an interview with the German Press Agency (dpa), Birnbaum said that grid operators could indeed make attacks more difficult and better prepare to quickly restore supply after damage. However, there will be no gap-free protection. "But we cannot make attacks impossible," the E.ON chief said. Headquartered in Essen, E.ON is, according to its own figures, Germany's largest electricity distribution grid operator and operates around 700,000 kilometers of lines – roughly one-third of all line kilometers in the country.
