Charles Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, who died in 1997, has announced a new book about his sister in which he aims to counter widely circulated falsehoods about her life.

Background to the announcement

The announcement comes just a few weeks before the work's publication, which according to his publisher is set to offer an unprecedented insight into Diana's childhood, her 15-year marriage to the then Prince of Wales, and the dramatic days following the fatal car crash in Paris in August 1997. Diana Frances Spencer became the first wife of Charles III in 1981.

In interviews given to mark the book's announcement, the Earl justified his move with the desire to correct false portrayals of his sister. Spencer said he did not want to leave the narrative to those who, in his view, had distorted it. The book therefore contains numerous previously unpublished family photographs and letters that show Diana's life from the perspective of her closest relatives.
