Geneva, April 27, 2026 EBU searches for lost Eurovision Song Contest recordings The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has launched a worldwide search for the missing recordings of the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and the 1964 edition, after confirming that neither Swiss nor Danish broadcasters possess complete archives of the events.

The Lost Archives

Neither Swiss broadcaster SRG nor Danish broadcaster DR have complete recordings of the 1956 contest in Lugano, Switzerland, or the 1964 edition in Copenhagen, Denmark, in their archives. Today, only photographs and short clips remain of these historic broadcasts. The disappearance of these recordings has puzzled archivists and Eurovision fans for decades.

The EBU remains optimistic that copies or fragments of the shows may still exist. "Die EBU glaubt, dass Kopien - oder Fragmente - dieser Shows noch immer existieren könnten," the organization stated, suggesting that private collectors or other broadcasters might hold surviving footage.

The Global Search Begins

The EBU officially announced the start of the search on Monday, urging anyone with information about the missing recordings to come forward. "Nun ist die Jagd eröffnet, um sie zu finden - wo auch immer auf der Welt sie sich verstecken," the EBU declared in a press release. The hunt for the lost broadcasts has taken on an almost mythic quality, with fans and historians alike eager to uncover these missing pieces of Eurovision history.
